This year, we have a lot of prestigious sports event such as Thomas & Uber Cup in MAY for the badminton tournaments in the world and recently the heat is on FIFA World Cup, where people are talking about it over the office, Facebook, and mass media as well as broadcast the news and games even widely used for commercial strategy in business (e.g. cakes, set meal, insurance). Among these sports games, what are the indispensable criteria for success? Today is about building strong teams.

  1. Sense of unity
  2. No sports team is successful without working together to reach a common goal. Teamwork is essential to a good performance of any sports team.Don’t let individual objectives take precedence over group goals,  especially in football. It requires a pretty unique brand of teamwork where understanding your role and your teammates is critical. Everyone needs to combine their efforts and overcome any obstacles -> Not a single pass can be made without a certain level of understanding between players. Trusting your teammate to do their job is also of utmost importance. The emotional ups and downs that a team will experience helping to build trust over time. Have a culture to support each other and build trusting relationships. Players encourage each other when they make mistakes, to persevere when practicing, and congratulate (e.g. through Hug, handshake) each other when they achieve success-> motivate everyone and ultimately, it improves everyone’s learning and enjoyment.

Strategy (Attack & Defense)

For example, football not only depends on your skills on the soccer ball, but also on your ability to read the game, make quick decisions, and communicate with your teammates. No matter how crisp your dribbling, shooting, and passing skills may be, it’s all useless without an understanding of strategy – knowing where to pass the ball, when to dribble, and just a general understanding of the game. Although it seems simple–to kick the ball into the opposing team’s goal, however the strategies are endless and it is also a field of study. Some basic strategy like fake shot,. In badminton as well, you and your partner have to figure out how making the best out of your skills together. Play to your own strengths and your opponent’s weaknesses. Different strategies use for singles, doubles and mixed doubles games. Singles -> One simple badminton strategy often used in singles is to serve long and high to your opponent’s back court. This will force your opponent to move back to the baseline and open up his forecourt where it’s hard to smash at baseline. While in doubles play, the tactic is to serve low so that the serving side would not be placed in a defensive position.

Individual– physically, mentally, discipline

Mental strength: players are put under intense pressure. It is more of a mental battle and how our players handle the pressure.  Do we mentally prepare for the game even after the loss or injury experience that we had in past? (e.g. Uruguay striker-  Luis Suarez defends biting Giorgio Chiellinià is it part of mental health issue?). Confidence: Self-confidence is one of the most important characteristics a player can possess during a match, especially if the outcome of the match is uncertain. Confidence is a belief; this makes it a thought.  Physically Body Condition:Stamina, Power, Jumping, Balance, dynamic movements, such as sprints, jumps and turns, speed and the overall Fitness. Discipline:The players need to have self-discipline in their lifestyle and training himself and to work hard.

Remember SIT – STRATEGY, INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE AND TEAMWORK are important in building strong team which can also translate into business life. In whatever career we choose, we need to understand people, establish friendships, motivate others and work together. Everybody has a role to play in their job and their life. Life is a team sport! The team players could be our family members, colleagues, friends, neighbors and etc. Thinking about your life as a team sport forces you to realize an important lesson: your life is dramatically impacted by the people around you.
